As we mourn the tragic loss of lives from
the recent attack against this country, we must also consider its
adverse impact on the economy, and what we must do to offset
those impacts. One way to help the economy is to re-examine and
adjust regulations that stifle economic activity.
Regulations that deny landowners the right to use and develop
their land and natural resources to their economic potential fall
in this category. Also, unreasonable development charges,
conditions and overly burdensome procedures unduly restrict much
needed economic activity. Unnecessary regulations which impose
costs to the economy while providing little or no public benefits
should be eliminated.
Reasonable development and utilization of resources will provide
economic stimulus in many areas. It will provide jobs and support
a wide range of businesses, directly and indirectly, from
manufacturing to services of all kinds. It will help provide
needed income taxes and property taxes for schools and government
at all levels, including funds to combat terrorism.
The economies of our country and state were in a depressed
condition prior to the attack. Now, it's even more important we
restore and strengthen them as quickly as possible.
The time to act is now.
