Still no word on Measure 7 lawsuit
Oregon voters
continue to await the outcome of the lawsuits challenging Ballot
Measure 7, the landmark property rights measure approved by
Oregon voters in November, 2000.
The lawsuits challenging Measure 7 were filed in December 2000,
and worked their way to the Oregon Supreme Court in an expedited
manner. The Oregon Supreme Court heard argument on the cases on
September 10, 2001.
"We remain confident that we will win," said Dave
Hunnicutt, Director of Legal Affairs for Oregonians In Action.
"The law is on our side, although the politics probably
arent."
As reported in earlier editions of Looking Forward, the challenge
to Measure 7 is based on the claim that Measure 7 made multiple
changes to the Oregon Constitution, and each change should have
been voted on separately.
"We believe the lawsuits are frivolous," continued
Hunnicutt. "But the Oregon Supreme Court has shown a real
willingness to invalidate amendments that the people have
approved, so its tough to predict the outcome of the
cases."
A decision by the Oregon Supreme Court is expected soon.
